About Us

Cardrona Curling Club Inc.

The sport of Curling has been played in the Upper Clutha district for over 140 years. It was brought to New Zealand by Scottish settlers and was popular with Central Otago gold miners in the mid 1800’s.
Historic records, indicate that no formal curling club was ever established in the Upper Clutha, the closest being 50km away at Lowburn.

A group of  Upper Clutha residents has been experimenting with home made curling stones on a private pond in the Cardrona Valley for the past 3 years. This endeavor indicated that ice would be available for outdoor curling  for approximately 6 weeks each year.

This early initiative has now resulted in the formation of the Cardrona Curling Club Inc.. The club is a non profit sporting organization, with the primary objective to:

Establish and promote the sport of curling in the Upper Clutha District. In addition to abide by the rules and traditions of new Zealand Curling and promote fellowship amongst Members.

The Club has been granted affiliation to the New Zealand Curling Association, and granted  the  Club Colours, Light Blue and Black.

The Club has raised funds for an initial sheet of curling stones (16), allowing 8 persons to play. During the coming financial year, the Club will be actively fund raising for a second sheet of stones (approx.  $10,000).
